Journée d'été du diesel DCDR

patrimoine

For one day only in summer 2025, the Downpatrick and County Down Railway, the Irish Traction Group, and Táilte Tours have worked together to organise a special diesel day with three different forms of traction – A39R, 146, and the famous ‘Derry Girls’ 450 class railcar, 458. This event jointly celebrates the 40th anniversary of DCDR’s founding and the Railway 200 Anniversary, giving passengers a unique opportunity to sample different generations of diesel traction from across the island of Ireland. This will be the first diesel loco running day at Downpatrick since the railway was severely flooded in 2023.

The itinerary for the day includes haulage behind A39R and 146, as well as travel in 450 class railcar 458; G class cab rides in the locomotive yard; lineside photo opportunities; and cab rides (randomly selected from booked passengers). As well as the train journeys, you can explore our station, museum, signal cabin, carriage and locomotive collection, and gift shop (with a new selection of second hand and new railway books on sale). Note that trains will use the North Line only, from Downpatrick to Inch Abbey. Due to ongoing impacts from the flooding in 2023, C231 is withdrawn from service.
