Railway 200 – Celebrating the History of the Balerno Branch Railway

patrimoineécolefamille

In conjunction with Railway 200 we are bringing together a unique railway exhibition at Currie Library celebrating the history of the former branch line known as the Balerno Loop which was part of the Caledonian Railway. It will focus on the former stations Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green and Colinton as well as the mills which formed part of this historic railway branch. We will also be hosting a special talk by the Colinton Tunnel organisation – Scotland’s largest historical mural. You will learn about the people who helped build these communities through the railway in a golden era of steam and engineering. We will showcase digital displays, working models and interesting topics on local history whilst celebrating 200 years of railways within the UK.

The exhibition will take place within Currie Library – 210 Lanark Road West, Currie, Edinburgh from Thursday 6th November to Wednesday 3rd December 2025.

Opening times Monday and Wednesday 1pm – 8pm , Tuesday Thursday Friday and Saturday 10pm-5pm.

This free exhibition is aimed at anyone who has an interest in railway history and how railways helped build local communities in a bye gone era. It will also feature an extensive collection of books about railways past present and future which can be borrowed through a library membership.
