The railway came to Guildford on May 5, 1845. From Thursday to Sunday, May 1 to 4, 2025 there will be a free exhibition of vintage photographs, steam train sound recordings and more, telling the story of Guildford’s railway history and heritage. 2025 also marks the 160th anniversary of the opening of the Guildford to Horsham line (and its closure 60 years ago), the 140th anniversary of the opening of the London Waterloo to Guildford ‘new’ line via Cobham, and the 100th anniversary of the first electric train arriving a Guildford. The exhibition will be manned by volunteers including former Guildford railwaymen. The exhibition will be in a shop unit by the taxi rank at the front of the railway station. On Sunday, May 4, retired railwayman and historian Geoff Burch and local historian David Rose will be leading a free guided walk at Guildford railway station, also visiting the site of the former motive power depot (now a multi-storey car park) and Yorky’s Bridge over the railway to the north of the station. The events are being hosted by the Friends of Guildford Railway Station group in conjunction with the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership. More details will follow soon.
