“St Albans (North Harrow) Railway Evening” is held at 7.30pm on Saturday evenings every 6 months in St Albans Church Hall. It is a relaxed gathering of folk loosely connected to St Albans Church or the surrounding community, but everybody is welcome. There is no charge to attend, but we do collect for the ‘Railway Children’ charity, supporting vulnerable children alone and at risk, especially at railway stations and other transport hubs.

On this occasion there will be three talks, each of about 30 minutes, to be given on “Harrow and the Railway in 1825”, “Harrow and the Railway in 1925”, and “Harrow and the Railway in 2025”.

The talks will be given by Professor Richard Dennis, a historical geographer with interests in transport history; Reg Davies, author of ‘Chilterns & Cotswolds: Forgotten Railways’, ‘London and Its Railways’ and ‘Rails to the People’s Palace’, and Gerry Devine, retired engineer and community transport advocate. Each talk will focus on the impact of the railway on Harrow, from what local residents knew and thought about the railway in 1825, when the first railway through the area was barely on the drawing-board, through to the potential impact of HS2 and the latest Underground developments. The talks should appeal to anybody with an interest in local history and anybody with an interest in railways. No booking required, but it would be helpful for us to judge numbers if those planning to attend could contact us by email in advance.
