This is a sixty minute walking tour in Brighton which takes place in the vicinity of Brighton Station and the former location of the Brighton Locomotive Works. It is particularly aimed at railway enthusiasts but also those who have a general interest in history, art/architecture and all things Brighton. The wider context is the transformational change in the United Kingdom marked by the beginning of the Railway Age in Stockton and Darlington 200 years ago. The tour’s specific theme is the consideration of the important role that Brighton subsequently played in this significant period of technological, economic and social change until well into the twentieth century. So we start off in the shadow of the terminus building, before making our way towards places and sites connected with Brighton’s railway history. This includes hearing about key players such as William Stroudley, Laurence Billinton etc, as well about the iconic Brighton Belle service – before ultimately returning to see and hear about the Victorian masterpiece that is the terminus building with glass canopy overarching Brighton Station.
