Bank holiday weekend (August 23 – 25) is scheduled to see a line up of industrial engines including Ashington No 5 which pulled some of the first trains when the line was saved for preservation and which is returning for one week courtesy of North Tyneside Steam Railway. Hunslet “Austerity” locomotive No 18 is also scheduled to be in action – the engine was a regular performer on the line in the 1980s and 1990s and has recently returned for a further spell. Sister locomotive No 22, Hunslet 1589 “Newstead”, which has returned to action this year after more than 50 years out of action, and our smallest working engine “Wissington” are also likely to be in action.
On Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 & Thursday 28, No. 5 will be joined by new-build GWR express locomotive “Betton Grange” which entered service last year and shows just how far the heritage railway movement has progressed in the five decades since the line re-opened.
Carriages are scheduled to include our unique train of LNER teak-bodied, articulated coaches which celebrated their centenary in 2024; a train of 1950s commuter carriages – many with individual compartments that were typical of the time; and a train of British Railways’ coaches dating from the 1960s.
