Rail 200 European Heritage Open Day

heritagefamily

On Saturday September 13 Whitehead Railway Museum throws open its doors to the public as part of European Heritage Open Day (EHOD). For one day only admission to the award-winning museum will be free. In tandem with this the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland will be operating pay-for steam train rides at the museum. Tickets for the short trip within the Society’s site are priced at £5 adults and £3 for children. They can be booked online at www.steamtrainsireland.com or bought over the counter at the museum’s Cups & Carriages cafe. The museum encompasses five galleries and visitors will find themselves whisked back in time to the steam era. An opportunity to visit a traditional railway signal cabin and to see the giants of steam close up. You can step aboard the footplate of a steam locomotive and imagine what life must have been like for the driver and fireman. There are four carriages to explore ranging from a buffet car to a saloon in which the late Queen once travelled. Along the way there are numerous displays containing nuggets of information about the key role the railways played in the development of Ireland north and south.

We’re excited to be linking in with Railway 200 this year and look forward to rolling out the mat for a bumper crowd of visitors.

We’re open from 11am to 2.30pm and we look forward to welcoming you to our museum
