Chelmsford Society of Model Engineers

heritagefamily

The Chelmsford Society of Model Engineers is 90 years old. Our members come from all walks of life and do not necessarily have an engineering background. Membership is open to all with an interest in model engineering. We have a membership of over 80.

Our interests cover all forms of model engineering from steam to horology. Members also operate Chelmsford City Miniature Railway, carrying passengers pulled by steam locomotives on two-scale railway tracks. Situated in Central Park, in the City of Chelmsford, the railways are used to give rides to members of the public.

Railway 200

The Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on September 27, 1825, connecting places, people, communities and ideas and ultimately transforming the world.

Railway 200 will be a year-long nationwide partnership-led campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail. It invites community, rail and other groups to get involved.

As part of these celebrations we are planning a special railway gala day on Sunday 21st September 2025. 10.am to 4.00pm

We will be operating our 3.5 inch. 5 inch and 7.25 steam railways in addition to our garden railway with 32mm and 45 mm gauges. There will also be demonstrations of Hornby clockwork and electric railway layouts to illustrate toy trains through the ages.
