Guided walk – Cefn Ila and Usk

heritagefamily

The disused railway station at Usk was opened on the 2nd June 1856 and formed part of the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool Railway. In its heyday it was one of only two stations on the line that had two platforms. However, today the station is barely recognisable with much of the railway infrastructure hidden under dense undergrowth. The 256 yard tunnel adjacent to the station was cut through sandstone and during construction a number of fossils were discovered. The station closed in 1955.

The Cefn Ila walk (7 miles), part of the Chepstow Walking Festival 2025, will explore the remains and follow a stretch of the track bed, crossing the bridges over the Usk to Abergavenny road and the River Usk. The line towards Glascoed and Little Mill can be clearly seen from the hill above the town.
