Cornwall and Devon unite in a call going out from Camborne to the South West for children, clubs, communities, businesses, families and railway modellers to create part of a model railway that captures their community to be pieced together to make the world’s biggest model railway as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations
- Community marks 200th anniversary of the railways in the birthplace of Richard Trevithick inventor of the steam railway loco
- National project launched in Camborne School community to co-create the world’s biggest model railway
- Children celebrate end of SATs week with rocket launch to inspire them to aim as high as Trevithick
- Firm that still makes model railway products in a factory in a Devon fishing village provides parts
- Organised by national non-profit STEAM Co as part of Our Creativity Revolution and Railway 200
- Interested parties are invited to sign up to receive a box file with a length of track installed in it to create a model around.
- The track is made and provided by Peco Model Trains based in Beer, Devon
It doesn’t matter how complex or simple it is – the hope is that some top end modellers will join in as well as children to see a variety of models.
Each box will tell a story – about children, people, community, a local station, a journey with photos and writing on the inside of the lid
A simple demonstration model called ‘Surf Side’ has been created by STEAM Co, a fictitious place in Cornwall with a surfboard shaped station and canopy, the Eden Project and Tin Mine pump houses in the background.
Short films made by the creators describing their project will be uploaded to YouTube and linked to it using QR code on the lid.
The first batch of box layouts will be displayed on William Murdoch Day in Redruth Saturday 7th June then in Darlington on 27th September via 23 UK Festivals including Glastonbury
