Popular Exhibition about much missed railway to return for Railway 200
The Lowestoft Central Project has announced that its hugely popular exhibition about the former Lowestoft to Yarmouth Railway will return in May as part of national celebrations marking 200 years of the passenger railway in the UK.
The line from Lowestoft to Yarmouth opened in 1903 with stations at Lowestoft North, Corton, Hopton On Sea, Gorleston Links Halt, Gorleston, Gorleston North, Yarmouth South Town and Yarmouth Beach.
The line was trimmed back in the 1950s due to costs involved in maintaining the Breydon Viaduct across to Yarmouth Beach Station but later upgraded in 1959 with the closure of the Beccles – Yarmouth South Town route. Sadly, a series of rationalisations and re-routing of holiday traffic saw the line and services downgraded with full closure coming in May 1970.
Today much of the route has been redeveloped with roads, housing and industrial facilities built on the route however much of the line, its embankments, bridges and one station building survive as does Lowestoft Station which was named Lowestoft Central when the line first opened.
The exhibition includes a host of images and memories from both passengers and people who worked the line and was first staged to mark the 50th Anniversary of closure in 2020.
The Lowestoft – Yarmouth Railway Exhibition will run inside the Parcels Office at Lowestoft railway station from Friday 2nd to Friday 9th May and will be open between 10.30am and 3.30pm (last admission 3pm). Admission is Free and there is no need to book.
