Join us at Brecon Mountain Railway for a special Railway 200 event celebrating two centuries of railway history and the impact of the railways on our local communities. We’re proud to host a day of discovery, storytelling, and heritage on the edge of the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog.
We’ll be welcoming a range of local and regional organisations throughout the day:
Merthyr Libraries will be bringing a fascinating selection of historic artefacts and books from their collection, shining a light on the rich rail heritage of Merthyr and the Valleys.
Transport for Wales will be on hand to talk about the Railway 200 campaign and the story of modern rail travel in Wales—connecting past to present. The new community rail partnership (Three Valleys CRP) will also be on hand to meet everyone.
Merthyr Borough Council’s Tourism Team and Cyfarthfa Castle Museum will highlight the vital role that the railway played in shaping Merthyr Tydfil’s growth, industry, and identity.
Workshop Tours – Get a rare behind-the-scenes look at our locomotive workshops! Pre-booked group tours will explore how our historic American-built Baldwin locomotives are lovingly maintained and restored.
Special Guided Train – 2:30pm Departure (ticket required)
Step aboard our 2:30pm service for a unique journey through time. Local historian Huw Williams will deliver live commentary, sharing stories of the Brecon Mountain Railway, the wider network of local lines, and the stunning landscapes that surround us.
Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, a local history buff, or looking for a meaningful day out in the heart of South Wales, there’s something here for everyone.
