12 July is the centenary of the opening of Motspur Park station, and in 2025 — when it falls on a Saturday — this anniversary will be marked by a display of historic maps, photographs, railway artefacts, a scale model of the area as it was in 1925, and a working model railway, all in West Barnes Library (right next to the station). There will be talk(s) at the library from 10am; a ribbon-cutting at the station entrance at 11am, with the local MP, representatives of the train company (SWR), local councillors and members of community groups (to which all are welcome). From noon there will be a fair at Blossom House School (next to both the station and the library), and in the afternoon a Picnic in the Park at the nearby Joseph Hood Playing Fields (with stalls from various community groups, and singing by the West Barnes Singers). A range of souvenirs will be available at the library: fridge magnets in the shape of hstoric station signage; postcards showing local artists’ views of the station; local history and railway booklets.
The model railway, display of maps etc at West Barnes Library will also be open on Friday 11 July.
The activities are being organised by members of a range of local groups, including the Friends of West Barnes Library, the Friends of the Joseph Hood Playing Fields, the Green Valley Railway, residents’ associations (New Malden RA; Raynes Park & West Barnes RA), local history societies (Maldens & Coombe Heritage Society; Merton Historical Society) and the West Barnes Singers.
