Lost railways of Pillgwenlly, Newport

patrimonioespecial

This guided walk, led by Ian of South Wales Branch / Cangen De Cymru of the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society RCTS, will take us along the west bank of the River Usk and into the Pillgwenlly area of Newport to show us the almost entirely disappeared railway scene from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

There were many railway lines crowding the west bank, bringing coal and other commodities down from the Valleys for loading onto ships by the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Co. and its successor companies. The rapid expansion of railway in Monmouthshire followed the success of the Stockton & Darlington Railway which opened to carry coal, other freight and people on 27th September 1825.

We will walk along the river bank to visit the sites of an old railway station, a locomotive engine shed and of a mishap which befell a ship on the river, amongst other locations.

Ian will bring folders of old photographs of the locations we will visit.

The walk will be about 2 to 3 miles long, on flat surfaces with frequent stops. There will be the opportunity for a refreshment stop.

Please meet Ian in the bus station at the rear of the Potters public house , Upper Dock Street , Newport
NP20 1DL at 10.30 on Wednesday 1st October. The meeting point is 10 minutes walk from Newport Railway Station and adjacent to the Friars Walk car park, NP20 1EA
