2025 marks 40 years since the Downpatrick & County Down Railway was formally established — and we’re celebrating in style! This milestone event is also part of Railway 200, the UK-wide celebration marking 200 years since the birth of the railway era in 1825. As the only standard-gauge heritage railway in Northern Ireland, DCDR is proud to take part in this national milestone.
To celebrate, we’re hosting a very special dinner at the historic Slieve Donard Resort and Spa in Newcastle on Saturday 2nd August 2025 to celebrate both milestones. The hotel was originally built by the Belfast & County Down Railway, making it the perfect venue to reflect on our journey.
Our evening will feature:
- A three-course dinner in five-star surroundings
- Hosting by BBC Radio Ulster’s Anne Marie Wallace
- A special appearance by comedian Tim McGarry, with his unique take on our story
- Live music from Linley Hamilton MBE and his jazz quartet
- A room full of railway enthusiasts, volunteers, stakeholders and supporters
This event is the centrepiece of our 40th anniversary year and a celebration of heritage, community, and volunteerism — and a key date within the Railway 200 calendar.
