For over 60 years, passengers used the staircase at Llangollen Station to reach trains bound towards Berwyn, Glyndyfrdwy, Carrog and Corwen. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, it is once again possible to reach Corwen by train from Llangollen.
However, until the line’s closure in 1965, it was also possible to travel on the same trains to Bala, Dolgellau and the Cambrian Coast resort of Barmouth. The Great Western Railway described the journey as ‘a paradise for artists and fishermen and a country rich in mountain streams, wild woods and wide far views, unbeaten in any part of Wales’.
For over a century, passengers flocked through Llangollen on their way to the Cambrian Coast in search of sun, sand and sea – the essential ingredients for a summer holiday. Explore the pleasures and pastimes of these seaside resorts through this unique display of historical posters, photographs and artefacts.
