Dartmouth Railway 200

As we get closer to our event and have confirmed our activities, I would be grateful if you could update our entry for the Dartmouth railway200 event to the following:

Join us in Dartmouth for Railway 200, a special celebration marking 200 years of railway history, right from the birthplace of steam innovation. It all began here in Dartmouth, where the Newcomen Engine laid the foundation for the age of steam. Now, two centuries later, we’re bringing that history to life with a town-wide event filled with interactive exhibits, model railways, and family fun.

Explore the Bradley Terminus layout, brought by the South Devon Model Railway Society. You’ll also have the chance to meet and learn from some of the region’s most passionate rail groups and associations, with displays from the South Devon Railway, Marsh Mills Railway, Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, and the Heathfield Rail Link Association.

Dartmouth Museum will be open from 11-4 and will be showcasing their unique David Hulse collection of working Atmospheric Steam Engines, inspired by the original Newcomen engine, the highlight of the exhibition.  Exceptionally, all of the engines will be running on the day. They will also be hosting a special talk about their history and significance at 12:30pm on the day in the Guildhall. Newton Abbot Library will be presenting a dedicated exhibition exploring the history of Kingswear and Kingswear Station, highlighting its role in the region’s railway heritage.

Discover Dartmouth in a whole new way with our Steam and Railway Trail and a special Timeline Tour around the town, showcasing Dartmouth’s unique connection to steam and rail across the centuries.

We are also highlighting Railway 200 careers, giving visitors the chance to explore the many roles that keep the railways running. From engineers and conductors to heritage preservation experts, attendees can find out what it takes to work in the world of steam and rail, and learn about opportunities for young people looking to start their own railway journey.

For younger visitors, there will be a whole kids’ area filled with crafts, LEGO building, and wooden train sets, perfect for sparking creativity and inspiring the next generation of rail enthusiasts. Dartmouth Library will also be running a programme of children’s events inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine, including themed crafts, drawing sessions, and storytelling. As an extra highlight, we are thrilled to share a very special video message from Veronica Chambers, daughter of the original author of Thomas the Tank Engine, making this a truly memorable celebration for Thomas fans.

Whether you’re a lifelong rail enthusiast or simply looking for a unique day out, Railway 200 promises a packed schedule of exhibits and events celebrating Dartmouth’s pivotal role in the story of steam.
