Via Ravenna Underpass Railway Mural

heritagecareersschool

As part of Railway 200 we are undertaking the restoration of a 1987 railway mural located in the Via Ravenna Underpass which links Chichester Railway Station with Chichester College and the City of Chichester.

The original railway carriage mural was designed by a Chichester College student, the mural lasted well and was last restored in 2014 by the Chichester Society. With significant anniversaries such as Railway 200, Chichester College 60 and Chichester Cathedral 950 it was time to once again engage and involve Art and Design students from nearby Chichester College to help restore, revive and in many ways reimagine the railway themed designs for a busy underpass used by commuters, students, schools, residents and visitors.

The creative design partnership involves Chichester College, respected mural artist Ben Cavanagh, Chichester JAM Cafe, South East Community Rail Partnership, Network Rail, Southern GTR, Chichester Cathedral, West Sussex County Council, Chichester City Council, Chichester District Council with kind assistance from The Chichester Society. The mural encompasses a variety of local scenes as viewed from the railway carriage and it is intended to refresh and develop these themes linked to Railway 200 making the underpass a vibrant and welcoming space for the community.
