Come join us at Caffi Soar in Canolfan a Theatr Soar.

On the 21st February 1804, the first ever steam powered journey took place right here in Merthyr – the start of the “Railway Age”. The route ran just behind Pontmorlais High Street (the worlds first railway bridge (possibly) is hidden, but close by too). This year is Railway 200 across the UK to celebrate the first passenger journey in Stockton and Darlington. The Three Valleys Community Rail Partnership is celebrating our local history throughout 2025, starting with the 21st Febrauary 2025.

In the morning is a walk – more details about the walk here.

In the afternoon, you are welcome to come along to Theatr Soar in Pontmorlais, their cafe will be open and it’s a great opportunity to chat further with your fellow walkers. There will also be other heritage organisations joining us. If the walk is cancelled because of the typical Valleys weather, the afternoon also offers us an escape from rain. You can do the morning, afternoon or both!

The Three Valleys Community Rail Partnership, We Love Merthyr, the heritage expert from Transport for Wales, National Library and more will be be there – it is an informal and welcoming atmosphere to have a chat about your memories of the railways and to learn more about your local area.
