Shildon, located in County Durham, is known as the ‘Cradle of the Railways’ and the world’s first true railway town. Engineer Timothy Hackworth established his own locomotive works in Shildon alongside those of the S&DR. Shildon was the terminus of the S&DR, when it opened in 1825. Its first locomotive superintendent was Timothy Hackworth, who maintained their locomotives at the Soho Works. By the 1970s, Shildon Works was the biggest wagon works in the world, producing thousands of rail vehicles every year. Shildon is now home to Locomotion, a museum and visitor attraction, cited as a fun family day out in the birthplace of the railways.

The Shildon Shindig will be held on Saturday 17th May at Shildon AFC’s ground, which plays a huge part in the local community and is a real focal point for not just football fans but also local people, schools and businesses.

Shildon AFC plays in the Northern League and delivers benefit both on and off the pitch, including charity events, free holiday activities for youngsters and facilities for schools and community organisations to use.

The Shindig aims to bring individuals and together to celebrate the best of Shildon and its heritage, including the benefits the railway has bought and continues to bring to the town, as well as the wider area.

The event will bring face painting, inflatables, children’s entertainment, bands and music, food vendors and a charity football match for everyone to enjoy.
