Join Herne Bay railway historian Mark Jones, on one of his Herne Bay guided station tours, Whitstable railway heritage walks, history talks, or documentary screenings. Mark has served the local community as railway employee for 40 years and takes a keen interest in the railway history of his home town Herne Bay and neighbouring Whitstable. Often forgotten about,, the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway was the world’s first regular steam hauled passenger railway, opening on 3rd May 1830. Accompanied by historical images, Mark always dresses for the occasion, dusting down his 40 year old uniform.
Supported by his employer Southeastern Railway, he is curator of the Railway 200 exhibitions at Herne Bay and Whitstable museums.
