Historic Buildings & Places, one of the National Amenity Societies, works to sustain, defend and promote all aspects of the built historic environment for the benefit of all. As part of Railway 200, we are delighted to host an online talk celebrating the heritage of the Great Little Trains of Wales.
This event will explore the story of Wales’s narrow-gauge steam railways, which continue to capture the imagination of visitors from around the world. Developed in the 19th century to serve industry and communities, these railways have since become a vital part of the nation’s cultural and industrial heritage.
Our guest speaker, Jo Quinney, Marketing Manager for the Great Little Trains of Wales, will introduce the member railways, each with its own unique character and history. We will also hear from the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, focusing on the recent restoration of the historic Boston Lodge engineering works – a project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
This online talk is aimed at anyone interested in industrial heritage, historic railways, or the communities shaped by them. By linking the pioneering spirit of the 19th century with today’s efforts in conservation and tourism, the session will show how the legacy of the railway age continues to inspire and endure.
Free for Historic Buildings & Places members and £4 for non-members, the event offers an accessible way to join in celebrating 200 years since the birth of the modern railway and to reflect on how these extraordinary feats of engineering remain woven into our shared heritage.
