Walk for Rail Memories

Step up and support five vital charities making a difference in the railway community and beyond

Join us in celebrating 200 years of railway history by stepping up for a cause. Whether you choose to walk 26 miles in September or organise your own community walk event, your efforts will honour the legacy of Britain’s railways while supporting charities dedicated to memory, care and the community.

Ways to get involved

Take on a personal challenge

Walk 26 miles in September, marking the historic journey of the Stockton to Darlington Railway when it opened in 1825, or set a 200-mile goal throughout 2025.

  1. Login/create an account and then create your page, personalising it with all the details of your activity.
  2. Once your page is created there is an option to ‘edit/manage page’ in the top left corner. The ‘Railway 200 – Protecting rail memories for the future’ link (below the Share button) will take you back to the Railway 200 Charities page where you will see your event listed as a fundraiser.

Host your own Railway 200 walking event

Select a distance and path suitable for your participants. Circular routes that start and end at the same location are often ideal.

If your route crosses private land, obtain necessary permissions. For public spaces, contact local councils with event details.

Conduct risk assessments, arrange for first aid and consider marshals for road crossings.

Use our poster templates and social media hashtags #Railway200 and #ProtectingRailMemoriesForTheFuture to spread the word.

Encourage participants to share photos and stories from the walk, fostering a sense of community and achievement.
